The Winds of CHANGE, for this Hoenn Grass-Type

đź“° Hot Off the Pixel Press: Shiftry Rides the Winds of Change!

Hello Blast Hornets!
Welcome back to HOT off the Pixel Press, where we break down some of the most underrated Pokémon strategies and breathe new life into forgotten favorites. Today, we're diving into the untapped potential of Shiftry! My latest video, "SHIFTRY was TERRIBLE until THIS!," shows how Shiftry, once considered a struggling Pokémon in Generation III, has finally found its moment of glory, thanks to the introduction of the Wind Rider ability.
🌪️ Shiftry’s Struggles in Hoenn: A Pokémon Without Direction
Back in Generation III, Shiftry had a tough time standing out. It suffered from mediocre offensive stats, limited movepool options, and too many weaknesses to be a real threat. Despite its cool Grass/Dark typing, Shiftry was:
Lacking in Physical Attacks: Without strong physical moves to use its Attack stat, Shiftry’s offensive presence was virtually nonexistent.
Mediocre Special Attacks: Its Special Attack wasn’t much better, and it didn’t have access to moves that could take advantage of its Dark typing.
Too Many Weaknesses: From Fire and Ice to Bug and Flying, Shiftry had too many weaknesses to be reliable in battle.
Because of these limitations, Shiftry never got the chance to shine—until NOW!
🌪️ Wind Rider: The Game-Changing Ability
Shiftry’s Wind Rider ability has completely flipped the script. Whenever a wind-based move hits Shiftry or Tailwind is set up, its Attack stat is boosted by one stage. This ability turns Shiftry into an offensive beast with just the right support. In the video, I show how Wind Rider finally gives Shiftry the firepower it’s needed for so long.
Here’s why Wind Rider is a game-changer:
Free Attack Boost: Tailwind, one of the most popular support moves in competitive play, now boosts Shiftry’s Attack every time it's set up.
Synergistic Moveset: With access to moves like Leaf Blade, Knock Off, and even Explosion, Shiftry can now fully capitalize on its boosted Attack.
This strategy truly shines in doubles formats like VGC. I’ve only been playing VGC and doubles since January, but I’ve found that with the right partner, Shiftry can Protect on turn one, avoiding harm while Tailwind is set up. Common Tailwind setters include Pelipper, Murkrow, and, in my case, the airborne legend Drifblim, who brings even more wind synergy to the table with Air Balloon. Once Tailwind is in place, Shiftry can sweep with massive power!
đź’Ą How Powerful Is a Normal Gem + Wind Rider Boosted Explosion?
This is where Shiftry really shines. After one Wind Rider boost, Shiftry becomes a serious offensive threat. Now, let’s add the Normal Gem into the mix. The Normal Gem provides a one-time 50% boost to Shiftry’s already powerful Explosion. Here’s what happens:
Wind Rider Boost + Normal Gem Explosion = Catastrophic Damage. When Wind Rider activates and Shiftry uses Explosion boosted by a Normal Gem, the sheer power is enough to KO most opponents—even the bulkiest of threats.
And this is before Terastalization or STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus). The Normal Gem takes the base power of Explosion and pushes it to absurd levels. Combine that with Wind Rider, and you’ve got a one-turn game-changer.
Add in additional support like Helping Hand, or imagine pairing it with Terastalization to gain STAB on Explosion, and you’re looking at game-breaking levels of damage. Shiftry can single-handedly blow through teams with this set, making it a threat no one sees coming.
⚠️ Shiftry’s Frailty & Limitations: What You Need to Know
Despite Shiftry’s new strengths, it’s not without its flaws. While it’s stronger with Wind Rider in a doubles environment, it still carries its original weaknesses. Without Terastalization, Shiftry remains weak to common threats like Fire, Flying, and Bug-type attacks. Although not the frailest Pokémon, Shiftry isn’t the bulkiest either, which means proper positioning and support are crucial.
Currently, I’m using Shiftry as a Normal-type to maximize Explosion. But that raises a big question: What would you Terastalize Shiftry into? Would you choose Ghost to avoid your own Explosions or Dark for added STAB Knock Off power? How would you boost Shiftry? Share your ideas and thoughts with me—I’d love to hear how you’d use this explosive strategy!
🎮 Shiftry’s True Competitive Potential: No Longer in the Shadows
With this new ability, Shiftry has finally stepped into the spotlight. It can serve as both an offensive juggernaut and a tactical pivot in the right team composition. No longer is it limited by its poor movepool or low offensive presence—it’s now a force to be reckoned with.
🌬️ A Personal Take on Shiftry’s Design
I’ll admit—I’ve never been the biggest fan of Shiftry’s design. Tengus just don’t rank high on my list of favorite Pokémon aesthetics. While I enjoy tribal-themed designs, Shiftry just doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. When it was first introduced in Hoenn, I found its counterpart, Ludicolo, far superior. Ludicolo, with its Rain Dish ability, has always excelled as a defensive staller or offensive rain sweeper, while Seedot struggled with poor moves like Nature Power and never really got going.
But here’s the interesting part: the winds of change have finally blown in Shiftry’s favor. Now, it not only stands toe to toe with Ludicolo but also holds its own against other Grass/Dark types like Meowscarada and Zarude. Meowscarada’s Flower Trick and Zarude’s Jungle Healing keep them in a tier of their own, but Shiftry has carved out a unique niche with its Wind Rider-boosted Explosion.
It may not be the flashiest Pokémon, but if you’re going to use an underrated pick like Shiftry, focus on the one niche it excels at—massive Attack power. Meowscarada’s Flower Trick is reliable, and Zarude’s Jungle Healing offers great team support, but Shiftry’s explosive power in a Tailwind environment gives it the edge in certain situations.
